After moving to our little cabin without running water last year, we decided that, instead of digging an outhouse, we would try our hand at composting our poop. With the great book Humanure it was easy to get started and that's really one of the best step we've taken to live more sustainably. Composting is easy, takes very little time, is actually not gross at all, and transforms two different waste products (poop and sawdust) into a wonderfully rich soil nutrient!
After a whole year we filled up our composting bin so I had to start a new one. Thankfully we got a lot of straw from Crown S, as it takes quite a bit to start the bin and have a nice insulative layer at the bottom. We also got some 150 gallons of sawdust from the sawmill up the road. It helps us out with our compost and it helps them to get rid of their sawdust.
I hope there will be enough of a mass in the new compost bin for it to start composting well before it gets too cold. I remember last year it got a slow start and it worried me that the bin would get full in no time. But after a while the heat built up and everything went well from there. I'm sure it will be the same this time
