Eric got a grant from the Forest Service to thin out trees on the property as part of an effort to limit wildfires. He applied to take care of 25 acres and he hired a forestry expert to mark the trees that need to go.
We started working last week and boy it's a lot of work! The property hadn't been taken care of since it was first logged many years ago so there are many trees growing too close together to be healthy. Eric is in charge of cutting down the trees with the chain saw and I'm trying to keep up piling the logs and branches into burn piles. There is so much that I have to make a huge pile every 20 to 30 feet! Hopefully we won't burn the whole place down when it's time to burn the piles.
In the meantime, we're trying to find a sustainable pace to do it all before the deadline of November 30th but it's pretty hard. After about 5 hours we really poop out and it's hard to maintain a good rhythm day after day without slowing down quite a bit. Hopefully, the weather will hold out for us and we'll be happy it's all done.
